A heat pump doesn't burn fuel to create heat — it moves heat from outside to inside using electricity. For every unit of electricity consumed, a modern heat pump delivers 2–4 units of heat. Compare that to even the best gas furnace, which tops out around 98% efficiency. Heat pumps routinely operate at 200–400%.
A ductless mini-split heat pump is your heater in winter and your air conditioner in summer. One installation. One system to maintain. No window units, no portable AC, no separate furnace and AC. A heat pump does the same thing with the outdoors: it extracts heat energy from cold outdoor air (even at -10°F, there's heat energy in the air) and transfers it inside your home.
In summer, the process reverses — it pulls heat from inside your home and dumps it outside, just like an air conditioner. The only difference is that a heat pump can do both. One system, year-round comfort.
Cold winters were the old knock on heat pumps in New England. That argument no longer holds. Hyper-heat units from Mitsubishi and Senville operate at full rated capacity to -10°F and continue heating down to -22°F.
